Neither Reason Nor Apology
Collaborative Project with Rachel Livedalen
Through a process of statement and response this project documents the collaborative creation of work through pre-negotiated parameters and exchanges. Each artist worked independently, building upon the previous layers, until being forced to give over the work and decisive power. The work then traveled between artists multiple times. Likewise according to preset guidelines one was allowed to do as one wished with any aspect of the work. The addition of imagery as well as its deletion was welcomed. The process, derived from trust and apathy, became a means of working in new improvisational ways. Narratives and metaphors began to emerge as both artists’ symbols and iconography intermingled.
Through a shared interest in the cultural production of meaning by way of symbols, metaphors and common tropes, a larger exploration of artificiality comes to the forefront. Symbols of domesticity and nature are juxtaposed just as organic shapes are counterbalanced with rigid design and unnatural colors. Divisions of reality and the imagined are blurred while interior and exterior spaces are explored simultaneously. Tensions arise and connections are made through a conversation made physical between two women - histories, narratives, and experiences both real and unreal.
